An electrophysiology (EP) study is a specialized test that maps the heart’s electrical activity to pinpoint the exact cause of an arrhythmia — information that standard tests simply can’t provide.
Dr. Sidney Peykar uses advanced EP studies and 3D electroanatomical mapping to diagnose complex heart rhythm disorders and, when appropriate, treat them in the same procedure.
During an EP study, thin catheters are guided into the heart to record its electrical signals in real time. This allows Dr. Peykar to identify abnormal pathways and determine exactly which treatment will be most effective.
EP studies are far more precise than surface EKGs and are often the key to solving mysterious or hard-to-treat arrhythmias.
Your doctor may recommend an EP study if you have unexplained palpitations, fainting, or an arrhythmia that hasn’t been fully diagnosed by other tests.
One of the major advantages of an EP study is that it can often lead directly to treatment. If Dr. Peykar identifies a treatable arrhythmia during the study, he can frequently perform ablation in the same session — saving you time, recovery, and a second procedure.
The procedure is minimally invasive, and most patients go home the same day or the next morning.
EP studies are performed with sedation and local anesthesia, so most patients are comfortable throughout. You may feel some mild pressure at the catheter insertion site.
An EP study usually takes one to two hours. If ablation is performed during the same session, it may take longer.
An EKG records the heart’s electrical activity from the skin surface and can miss intermittent arrhythmias. An EP study records signals from inside the heart for far greater accuracy.
Most patients go home the same day or the next morning. Dr. Peykar will let you know what to expect based on your specific procedure.
